How does withdrawing from a course change my transcript?
Enter the course's credits and choose the treatment your school actually applies to a withdrawal. This is not academic advice about whether to withdraw; it only shows the numeric effect of a treatment you specify.
How we calculated this
Each treatment turns on or off three separate effects: whether the credits count as attempted, as earned, and toward your GPA. Using the example values above (3 credits, "W excluded entirely"), none of the three totals change at all, exactly matching a withdrawal your school treats as if the course never happened for GPA or credit purposes.
Limitations
This does not know your school's actual withdrawal policy, including deadlines (a withdrawal before versus after a census date often has different treatment), academic standing implications, or financial aid pace requirements. It only applies the specific treatment you select.
Common mistakes
A common error is assuming every W is excluded from everything, when many schools count it toward attempted credits for financial-aid pace calculations even while excluding it from GPA; use "attempted only" to model that specific, common middle case rather than "excluded entirely." Another is not distinguishing a withdrawal from an outright failing grade, which is a materially different treatment at most schools.
Frequently asked
- Which treatment does my school actually use?
- Check your registrar's withdrawal policy directly; the exact rule (and any deadline that changes it) is set by your school, not something this tool can determine for you.
- Does a withdrawal before the census date work differently?
- At many schools, dropping before a census or add/drop deadline removes the course from your record entirely, functionally equivalent to the "excluded entirely" option here; a later withdrawal often shifts to one of the other two treatments instead.
- Why does "attempted only" matter if it does not affect GPA?
- Because attempted-credit totals matter for other things this tool does not calculate, such as satisfactory academic progress requirements for financial aid.
- Can I compare a withdrawal against just taking a grade?
- Yes; run this scenario alongside GPA Inclusion Rule or Pass/Fail Scenario with your likely grade to compare the two paths.
- Does a withdrawal ever appear on a transcript even when it changes nothing numerically?
- Often yes; a "W" notation frequently stays visible on your transcript even under the "excluded entirely" treatment here, since visibility to anyone reading your transcript and numeric effect on GPA or credits are two separate things. This tool only calculates the numeric side.
