What is the planning impact of an incomplete grade?
Enter the course's credits and the grade you expect once the incomplete is resolved. This compares your current, temporary standing against a planning scenario; it does not change your actual transcript.
How we calculated this
While incomplete, the course is excluded from both your GPA denominator and your earned credits, since no final grade exists yet. Once completed at your expected grade, both the GPA credits and earned credits are added, along with the resulting quality points. Using the example values above (3 credits, expected final grade worth 3.0), the temporary state adds nothing, while completion would add 9 quality points.
Limitations
This does not know your school's actual deadline for resolving an incomplete, or what happens if that deadline passes (some schools automatically convert an unresolved incomplete to a failing grade). It only compares "still incomplete" against "resolved at your expected grade," both as scenarios, not predictions.
Common mistakes
A common error is treating the "expected final quality points" as guaranteed and building other plans (like a GPA target) entirely around it before the grade actually posts; treat it as your best estimate, and recalculate once the real grade is in. Another is assuming an incomplete already counts as a zero in your GPA right now; it typically does not, which is exactly why the temporary state here shows no GPA effect at all.
Frequently asked
- Does an incomplete hurt my current GPA?
- Not while it remains incomplete, under the typical treatment modeled here; it is simply excluded from the calculation until a real grade is recorded.
- What if my incomplete deadline passes without resolution?
- Many schools automatically convert an unresolved incomplete to a failing grade at that point; check your school's specific policy, since that would change the final scenario to a 0.0 quality-point outcome rather than your expected grade.
- Should I use my most likely grade or a worst-case grade?
- Either is useful depending on what you are planning for; run the calculation twice with different expected grades if you want to see the range of possible outcomes.
- Does this affect my degree-completion pace?
- While incomplete, the credits are not yet earned, which can affect pace-based requirements the same way any not-yet-completed course would; see Credits Remaining once you know the actual outcome.
