What changes if a course is treated as pass/fail?
Enter the course's credits, whether you passed or failed, and whether it counts toward your GPA at all. Credit completion and GPA are tracked separately, since a pass/fail course often affects one but not the other.
How we calculated this
A pass adds the course's credits to your earned-credit total; a fail does not. Separately, if the course counts toward GPA at all, its credits and quality points are added to that side of the calculation; if it is excluded, neither side of the GPA calculation is touched. Using the example values above (3 passed credits, GPA excluded), the result adds 3 credits to earned credits and 0 to the GPA denominator.
Limitations
This does not know your school's actual pass/fail policy, including whether pass/fail options are limited to certain course types, capped in number per term, or automatically excluded from GPA. Confirm the real rule before relying on this result for a decision that matters, such as whether taking a course pass/fail is a good idea.
Common mistakes
A common error is assuming every pass/fail course is automatically excluded from GPA; some schools still count a failing grade in a pass/fail course toward GPA even though a passing grade is excluded, which is an asymmetric rule this tool lets you model by choosing outcome and GPA-inclusion independently. Another is forgetting that "fail" still typically counts as an attempt on your transcript even though it adds no earned credits.
Frequently asked
- Does failing a pass/fail course always hurt my GPA?
- Only if your school's policy counts a pass/fail failure toward GPA; many schools exclude pass/fail entirely regardless of outcome, in which case a fail costs you earned credits but not GPA.
- Why does GPA inclusion not just follow from pass or fail?
- Because real school policies vary; some exclude pass/fail from GPA entirely, others treat a fail differently from a pass, so this tool asks about GPA inclusion and outcome separately rather than assuming a link between them.
- What if I am deciding whether to take a course pass/fail?
- Run this scenario alongside your regular graded outcome from GPA Inclusion Rule to compare the GPA impact of each path before deciding.
- Does this affect my degree-completion credits the same way?
- Only the earned-credit total shown here does; whether those credits satisfy a specific degree requirement is a separate question this tool does not check.
