Methodology

This page explains how Semester Clarity actually calculates a result, not just that the site "uses estimates." Every engine builds on the same small set of shared models described here; an individual engine's own page states which of these apply and any values specific to that decision.

Grade structures: points versus weighted categories

A course grade is modeled one of two ways, chosen by the student: a simple points model (points earned over points possible) or a weighted-category model (each category, such as homework or exams, contributes a percentage of the final grade). The weighted model requires category weights to account for 100% of the grade unless an explicitly supported alternative, such as a lowest-category drop, is selected. Extra credit is kept separate from the normal denominator rather than silently inflating it.

Known work versus projected work

When a course still has unscored assessments, Semester Clarity shows two different numbers rather than blending them into one: the current grade on graded work only, and a projected course grade that includes an assumption about remaining work. Any result that depends on an assumption about future work is labeled estimated. A score entered as zero is always treated as a real, confirmed value, never as missing data.

Quality points and GPA

GPA calculations convert a letter or numeric grade to quality points using either a standard 4.0-scale table or a student-entered custom scale, then weight those points by course credits to produce a term or cumulative average. Weighted and unweighted GPA are computed as distinct results rather than one figure with a hidden adjustment, and a transfer or repeated course is only included in a cumulative figure if the student marks it as counted, matching how institutions vary on this point.

Rounding and precision

Values are stored and calculated at full entered precision; rounding happens only at the point a result is displayed, using a disclosed rule (ordinarily to the hundredth for a percentage or GPA figure, or to the nearest whole point where a scale is defined in whole numbers). Where a rounding threshold itself is the subject of the decision, such as whether an 89.5 becomes a 90, the engine treats that threshold as an explicit, user-confirmed input rather than an assumption the site makes on the student's behalf.

Feasibility and reverse-solving

A "what score do I need" question is solved algebraically from the same course model used to calculate a current grade, not looked up from a table. Where a target is mathematically impossible given the remaining weight and scale (for example, a target that would require scoring above the maximum possible on remaining work), the engine states that plainly as an impossible result rather than returning a number above the scale's ceiling or silently clipping it.

How user-entered policy is treated

Rules like a lowest-score drop, a retake replacing or averaging with an original score, or an attendance-absence limit are never assumed by Semester Clarity. A policy engine asks for the specific rule as a parameter, labels it in the result as a student-entered assumption, and, where a critical fact is unknown, returns a conditional or range result instead of a single confident number. No page on this site claims to know a specific school's official policy.

Where a default or reference value comes from

A small number of engines offer an optional reference value, such as a common GPA scale, for convenience. Any such value is dated, described as a common convention rather than a universal rule, and always yields to a value the student enters. Semester Clarity does not maintain a live, per-institution policy database, and does not call an external service to "look up" a school's rules.
