What grade combination in my remaining courses reaches my target?
Enter any courses whose grade is already locked in, then your remaining courses (up to four) by credits only. This finds every combination of letter grades on the standard 4.0 scale, across your remaining courses, that reaches your target term GPA.
How we calculated this
Your locked-in courses set a fixed number of quality points; the required average quality points on your remaining courses is solved so that all courses combined reach your target GPA. Using the example values above (one locked A worth 3 credits, one remaining 3-credit course, target 3.5), the remaining course needs at least a 3.0 (a B) to reach the target. Every combination shown is checked by re-aggregating it against every course, locked and remaining, to confirm it actually meets or exceeds your target.
This tool supports up to four remaining courses at once and returns up to twelve qualifying combinations, since the number of possible combinations grows quickly with more courses and more grade options; it does not rank combinations, since no combination that meets your target is mathematically better than another.
Limitations
Grades are limited to the standard A/B/C/D/F 4.0 scale; it does not support plus/minus grades or a custom institutional scale. If your target cannot be reached by any combination on this scale, the tool reports that directly rather than suggesting an impossible grade.
Common mistakes
A common error is forgetting to include a course you have already finished as a "locked-in" course, which understates how many quality points you already have and overstates what your remaining courses need to do. Another is treating any one returned combination as recommended over another; they are all mathematically equivalent for reaching your target, and which one is realistic depends on your own course-by-course judgment.
Frequently asked
- What if no combination meets my target?
- The tool reports the target as infeasible on the standard scale; try a lower target, or check GPA Target Feasibility for the broader cumulative-GPA version of this same question.
- Why does it return more than one combination?
- Most targets can be reached multiple ways across several courses; every qualifying combination is shown, up to the display limit.
- Can I use this for more than four remaining courses?
- Not directly; split your courses into two smaller groups and check each mix separately, or lock in your best guess for extra courses first.
- Does course order matter?
- No; each combination assigns one grade per named course regardless of the order you entered them in.
