How much would one grade step in this course actually move my GPA?

Enter one course's credits, the quality-point step you are considering (for example, one full letter grade), and your total term credits. This reports the exact GPA change, not a rough estimate.

How we calculated this

The GPA delta equals the course's credits multiplied by the quality-point step, divided by total term credits, the same math used by Course Grade Effect on GPA. Using the example values above (a 3-credit course, a one-point step, in a 15-credit term), the GPA change is 0.2.

Equal credit and grade-step values always produce an equal delta, regardless of which specific course they belong to; leverage depends only on those two numbers relative to your total term credits.

Limitations

This reports the mathematical effect only; it says nothing about how likely you are to achieve that grade step. To compare leverage across several courses at once instead of one at a time, use Marginal Return by Course.

Common mistakes

A common error is entering a percentage-point step instead of a quality-point step, which are on very different scales and produce a meaningless result if mixed up. Another is using your program's total credits instead of just this term's credits, which understates the real leverage of a single term's course.

Frequently asked

What counts as a "quality-point step"?
The difference in quality points between two grades on your scale, such as 1.0 for a full letter step from B to A on a standard 4.0 scale.
Does a bigger course always have more leverage?
Yes, holding the grade step and total term credits fixed, more course credits produce a proportionally larger GPA change.
Can I compare several courses at once?
Yes; see Marginal Return by Course for a ranked comparison across multiple courses.
Does this account for a retake policy?
No; for a retake specifically, see GPA After Retake, which applies your stated replacement or count-both rule.
What if the step is negative, like a grade dropping?
Enter a negative quality-point step; the delta reported will be negative in the same proportion, showing exactly how much a drop would cost.
Does credit weight from other courses affect this number?
Only through total term credits; other courses' own grades do not enter this calculation at all, since it isolates the leverage of one course's step alone.
