How many classes can I miss all term under a minimum attendance floor?
Enter the total number of sessions for the whole term, your minimum attendance floor, and how many you have already missed. This works from one total session count, not a held-versus-future split.
How we calculated this
Total sessions times the floor rate gives the minimum number you must attend, rounded up to a whole session; everything else is the maximum you can miss for the whole term. Using the example values above (30 total sessions, an 80% floor, 2 already missed), you can miss 6 total sessions across the term, leaving 4 more after the 2 already gone.
Limitations
This treats every session as equally weighted and does not know your school's specific excuse policy; confirm which sessions are actually eligible before entering your totals. It also assumes you know the term's total session count in advance, which can shift if a class is cancelled or added.
Common mistakes
A common error is entering only the sessions held so far as "total sessions" instead of the full term's planned total, which understates how many misses you can actually afford across the whole term. If you want the version that works from a held-versus-future split instead, see Absences Remaining.
Frequently asked
- How is this different from Absences Remaining?
- The underlying math is the same inequality; this version works from one total-sessions number for the whole term, while Absences Remaining splits sessions into what has already been held and what remains.
- What if I have already missed more than the limit?
- The result reports that you are already over the limit for the floor you entered; recovering from that point requires either a lower effective floor or talking to your instructor about your options.
- Does a higher floor always allow fewer misses?
- Yes; a stricter (higher) floor always allows the same or fewer total misses, never more, for the same total session count.
- What if my total session count changes mid-term?
- Recalculate with the updated total; a cancelled or added session changes the total this calculation depends on.
- Does this account for excused absences separately from the limit?
- No, not unless you have already removed them from your "total sessions" and "already missed" counts; if your school excuses certain absences from the floor entirely, those sessions should not be counted as eligible sessions in the first place.
