This separates remaining work into two kinds: pieces you already have a fixed or expected score for, and pieces that are genuinely still unknown. It solves for the average the unknown pieces need to carry, given everything else.

How we calculated this

Everything with a known or fixed/expected score, including your current grade, is added up first; what remains is solved for over the weight that is genuinely still unknown. Using the example values above, an 80% current grade over 70% of the course contributes 56 points, and a 10%-weight quiz you already scored 100% on contributes another 10 points; the remaining 20% then needs an average of 90% to reach an 84% target.

Limitations

Common mistakes

A common error is putting a genuinely unknown assessment into the "fixed or expected" fields just because a rough guess exists; that field should only hold work you are confident in, since anything shakier belongs in the unknown weight so the required average reflects real uncertainty rather than false precision.

Frequently asked

Why separate fixed and unknown work instead of one big remaining weight?: Because averaging them together would hide how much pressure is actually on the truly unknown work. If part of what remains already has a realistic expected score, isolating it gives an honest, and often more encouraging, answer for the rest.
What if the required average is not achievable?: A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached through the unknown work alone; see Highest Possible Course Grade to confirm your real ceiling.
What if I have no fixed or expected work at all?: Leave those fields at zero; the calculation solves entirely over the unknown weight, the same as if that portion of the course did not exist yet.
Should I recalculate after every new grade?: Yes; the required average shifts every time a real score replaces an assumption, so revisiting this after each new grade keeps your target realistic.
