How much sooner could I finish by adding a summer term?
Enter your remaining credits, then a baseline schedule and the same schedule with summer credits inserted. Both are run through the same projected-completion method, so you can see the concrete difference summer coursework makes.
How we calculated this
Both schedules run through the same projected-completion method: planned credits accumulate term by term until your remaining-credits target is met. Using the example values above (33 remaining credits, a baseline of Fall 12, Spring 12, Fall 2 12, versus Fall 12, Summer 9, Spring 12 with summer inserted), the accelerated schedule reaches 33 credits by Spring, without ever needing a second Fall term, while the baseline only reaches the target once that second Fall term is added.
Adding nonnegative summer credits can only help or leave the result unchanged; it can never push your completion term later, since it only adds cumulative credits earlier in the calendar.
Limitations
This does not know whether your specific required courses are actually offered in summer, only that you entered a credit total for that term. It also does not account for summer tuition cost or availability, which can make an otherwise-faster schedule impractical for other reasons entirely.
Common mistakes
A common error is entering a baseline schedule that already assumes summer is unavailable without an explicit next term to compare against, which makes the comparison look more dramatic than it really is; enter a genuinely equivalent baseline continuation so the comparison is fair. Another is forgetting that inserting a zero-credit summer term changes nothing except adding a comparison row.
Frequently asked
- Do I need to include every future term?
- Include enough terms in each schedule that at least one of them reaches your remaining-credits target, or the tool reports the schedule as incomplete.
- What if summer credits do not change my completion term?
- That is a valid result; it means the summer credits were not the limiting factor in your specific schedule.
- Can I compare more than one summer scenario?
- Run the calculator again with a different summer credit amount to compare additional scenarios.
- Does this replace Projected Completion Term?
- No; Projected Completion Term runs one schedule, while this tool runs two side by side for direct comparison.
