How many credits remain in each of my requirements?

Add each credit bucket you track, such as major, minor, and electives, with its required and earned credits. If any credits count toward more than one bucket, enable overlap and enter the shared amount; otherwise every bucket is treated as fully separate.

How we calculated this

Each bucket's remaining credits are required minus earned, floored at zero, computed entirely separately from every other bucket (the same M-09 method as Credits Remaining). Using the example values above (major 60 required/45 earned, minor 18/9, electives 42/33), remaining credits are 15, 9, and 9 respectively, for a combined total of 33 before any overlap is applied.

If credits genuinely count toward more than one bucket, enabling overlap subtracts the shared amount once from the combined total only; each bucket's own remaining figure is never changed by overlap, since it still needs that many credits within its own requirement.

Limitations

This does not know your school's actual overlap rules; whether and how many credits can double-count between a major and a minor, for example, is entirely up to what you enter. It also treats every bucket as a flat credit count, not a list of specific required courses.

Common mistakes

A common error is entering earned credits that already include double-counted courses in more than one bucket without enabling overlap, which understates your true combined remaining total. Another is assuming the combined total is simply the sum of the buckets when your school does allow some overlap; enter that overlap explicitly rather than subtracting it by hand from one bucket only.

Frequently asked

How many buckets can I add?
As many as you track separately; common examples are major, minor, electives, and general education.
What if I don't know my overlap amount?
Leave overlap disabled; each bucket's own remaining figure is accurate either way, only the combined total changes.
Does this replace Degree Completion Percentage?
No; Degree Completion Percentage reports one overall percentage, while this tool breaks remaining credits out by specific requirement bucket.
Can a bucket's remaining credits go negative?
No; remaining credits are floored at zero once earned credits meet or exceed that bucket's requirement.
What if I have general-education credits too?
Add it as its own bucket alongside major, minor, and electives; the tool treats every bucket identically regardless of what you name it.
