How would adding or dropping one course change my timeline?
Enter your current remaining credits and planned pace, then the credits of one course you are considering adding or dropping. Your base plan is never changed; this shows a cloned version with just that one course applied.
How we calculated this
Your base plan's remaining credits and planned pace are used to compute terms remaining (M-09) once as-is, and once on a cloned plan with the one course's credits added or subtracted, at the same pace. Using the example values above (33 remaining credits at 12 credits per term, adding a 3-credit course), remaining credits move to 36 and the terms- remaining figure is recomputed for the new total, while your original 33-credit plan is never altered.
This tool covers the credit and timeline effect only. A course add or drop can also change your GPA if the course carries a grade different from your other courses; use Credit Load Effect on GPA for that separate calculation.
Limitations
This assumes your planned pace per term stays the same after the add or drop, which may not be realistic if the change is large enough to affect your actual course load that term. It also does not check whether the specific course you are adding or dropping satisfies any particular requirement.
Common mistakes
A common error is only checking the credit and timeline effect and forgetting the separate GPA effect of the same decision, especially for a drop that might otherwise have raised your GPA. Another is dropping a course credits amount larger than your actual remaining credits, which this tool rejects rather than silently returning a negative remaining-credits figure.
Frequently asked
- Does this change my saved base plan?
- No; the base plan is only cloned for this one calculation and is never modified.
- What if dropping this course also lowers my GPA calculation?
- Check Credit Load Effect on GPA separately; this tool only reports the credit and timeline side of the decision.
- Can I model adding and dropping courses at the same time?
- Not in a single calculation; run this tool once for each individual add or drop and combine the results yourself.
- Does course availability affect this result?
- No; it is a pure credits-and-pace calculation, not a check on when the course is actually offered.
